In this work we present a complete characterization and magnetic study of vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes (VOx/Hexa NT's) doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ ions. The morphology of the NT's has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, while the metallic elements have been quantified by the instrumental neutron activation analysis technique. The static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied by collecting data of magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature and by electron paramagnetic resonance. At difference of the majority reports in the literature, we do not observe magnetic dimers in vanadium oxide nanotubes. Also, we observed that the incorporation of metallic ions (Co2+, S = 3/2 and Ni2+, S = 1) decreases notably the amount of V4+ ions in the system, from 14-16% (nondoped case) to 2%-4%, with respect to the total vanadium atoms (fact corroborated by XPS experiments) anyway preserving the tubular nanostructure. The method to decrease the amount of V4+ in the nanotubes improves considerably their potential technological applications as Li-ion batteries cathodes.

Diatoms and macroinvertebrates have been extensively used as water quality indicators in Europe for the last two decades. In Portugal, the use of biological indicators to assess water quality in rivers has increased greatly. The aim of this work was to assess the water quality and ecological status of the Ul River in order to evaluate its ability for the establishment of a fluvial beach, using periphytic diatoms and macroinvertebrates as indicators. Four sites were selected along the Ul River. At each site, biological, physical, and chemical parameters were investigated. Epilithic diatoms and macroinvertebrates were sampled. The Specific Polluosensitivity Index and the Biological Diatom Index were applied to diatom data, while for macroinvertebrates, the Iberian Biological Monitoring Working Party (IBMWP) was used. According to the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that up to now, this river does not possess the ideal conditions for the establishment of a fluvial beach. We concluded that epilithic diatoms and macroinvertebrates provided consistent information on water quality assessment and can be used as biological indicators of the water quality in Ul River.

Secondary production of a macrobenthic community at an intertidal mudflat was estimated for 33 successive months. Sampling was carried out along a eutrophication gradient, including non-eutrophied Zostera meadows, an intermediate muddy area, and a strongly eutrophied sand-muddy flat, where macroalgal blooms of Enteromorpha spp. usually occur. The Zostera meadows were always the most productive habitat (145–225 g ash-free dry weight m−2 year−1). In the short term, the macroalgal bloom benefited the total estuarine production by enhancing the annual production in the eutrophied area. Nevertheless, our results show that this increase was short lived and in no way sufficient to match the production in the Zostera meadows. In the long term, the present study provides evidence that the disappearance of macrophyte beds, as a result of ongoing eutrophication, constitutes a major threat to the sustainability of the estuarine ecosystem.

The study of the diatom ecological preferences was conducted from January 2002 to June 2003 in Canal de Mira, Ria de Aveiro, Western Portugal. Three sampling stations along a salinity gradient were sampled monthly, in new moon, at high and low tide. Salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and nutrient contents were measured for each sampling station; chlorophyll a and diatom diversity and abundance were also evaluated. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to identify the environmental variables governing the composition and structure of diatom assemblage. The variation in the species data among the different reaches was strongly determined by the salinity spatial gradient and by the temperature temporal gradient. The lower reaches were dominated by marine species (e.g. Auliscus sculptus, Chaetoceros densus, Fallacia forcipata,Licmophora flabellata, L. grandis, Surirella comis), while in the most upstream station typical freshwater species dominated (e.g. Caloneis permagna, Cymatopleura solea, Cymbella tumida, Gomphonema longiceps, Pinnularia stommatophora, Stauroneis smithii). Weighted averaging was used to estimate optima and tolerances of some diatom taxa for the most influential variables. It was possible to establish groups oftaxa with defined and distinctive salinity and temperature preferences.

A novel strategy that allows to predict the responses of zooplanktonic species to environmental conditions in an estuarine temperate ecosystem (Mondego estuary) is presented. It uses 12 indicator species from the zooplanktonic Mondego database (102 species) that are common members of the different habitats, characterized by their specific hydrological conditions. Indicator-species analysis (ISA) was used to define and describe which species were typical of each of the five sampling stations in a 4-year study (2003–2006). First, a canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was carried out to objectively identify the species-habitat affinity based on the relationship between species, stations and environmental data. Response curves for each of the zooplanktonic species, generated by univariate logistic regression on each of the independent variables temperature and salinity, were generally in agreement with the descriptive statistics concerning the occurrence of those species in this particular estuarine ecosystem. Species-specific models that predict probability of occurrence relative to environmental parameters like salinity, water temperature, turbidity, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids and dissolved oxygen were then developed for the zooplanktonic species. The multiple logistic models used contained between 1 and 3 significant parameters and the percentage correctly predicted was moderate to high, ranging from 62 to 95%. The predictive accuracy of the model was assured by direct comparison of model predictions with the observed occurrence of species obtained in 2006 (validation) and from data collected in the early 2000s in another Portuguese estuary—Ria de Aveiro (Canal de Mira), a complex mesotidal shallow coastal lagoon. The regression logistic model here defined, correctly suggested that the distribution of zooplankton species was mainly dependent on salinity and water temperature. The logistic regression proved to be a useful approach for predicting the occurrence of species under varying environmental conditions at a local scale. Therefore, this model can be considered of reasonable application (and should be tested in other estuarine systems) due to its ability to predict the occurrence of individual zooplanktonic species associated with habitat changes.

he distribution of diatoms and dinoflagellates was studied from August 2002 to October 2003 in the northwest coastal zone of Portugal. Three sampling stations, perpendicular to the coast, were sampled monthly full moon, at high and low tide, near the shore, but before the surf zone. A total of 239 species were identified and quantified during the study period: 218 diatoms and 21 dinoflagellates. Although the phytoplankton community was dominated by marine diatoms, a proliferation of dinoflagellates was observed in late summer. Actinoptychus senarius, Grammatophora marina, Pseudo-nitzschia cf. seriata and Thalassionema nitzschioides were the most common diatoms at the three sampling stations. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to identify the environmental variables governing the composition and structure of the phytoplankton assemblages and showed that the temporal variation in the species data was mainly determined by the temperature temporal gradient.
