ABSTRACT This paper aims to study the 14 sermons preachead in portuguese autos-da-fé during the XVIIIth century and published. Their authors sought to demonstrate the truths of Christianity and the errors of Judaism, criticizing the blindness of the Jews, obstinate in their non-acceptance of Christ as the Messiah. They aimed primarily at the New Christians who allegedly judaized. They ended up functioning less as auxiliary mechanisms for the sincere conversion of new Christians and more as propaganda, justifying the existence of the Inquisition.

In this paper we study six sermons preached in Portugal and Brazil, between 1620 and 1754, praising the virtues of St. Peter Martyr or St. Peter of Verona (c. 1206-1252 ), Dominican inquisitor who was murdered by heretics and was canonized in 1253. It was later declared patron of the Inquisition. In these sermons, the example of the martyr was stressed but also took advantage to praise the action of the Holy Office and attack heresy, always generally referred. It was believed that the heretics had been responsible for the tragic death of Peter of Verona, while their persistence in error justified the existence of the Inquisition.
